The National Green Tribunal cited data showing India recorded over 20.98 crore waterborne disease cases from 2005-2022, with diarrhea comprising 86 percent. Approximately 200,000 people die yearly from contaminated drinking water. The tribunal estimated water scarcity could cause 6 percent GDP loss by 2030. NGT directed state authorities and municipal bodies to implement urgent corrective measures, including 24×7 water grievance monitoring apps and GIS-based pipeline mapping.
