From Telangana, an index that confirms — and challenges — what we know about caste

What Happened

Telangana's government created a Composite Backwardness Index measuring 242 caste groups using 35 million people's data across 75 information fields. The index scores castes on 42 parameters including wage work, education, sanitation, and discrimination. Results show SCs and STs are three times more backward than General castes; BCs are 2.7 times more backward.
