What Happened
The European Court of Justice ruled Tuesday that Hungary's 2021 anti-LGBTQ legislation violates EU law on multiple grounds. The case, supported by the European Commission, 16 member states, and the European Parliament, is considered the bloc's largest human rights case. Hungary's law banned promotion of homosexuality to minors, restricting books, plays, and films. The ruling comes months after Hungary's nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban lost elections.
