Shipowners received fraudulent messages claiming to be Iranian authorities, requesting cryptocurrency payments for safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. Maritime risk firm Marisks warned that scammers posed as officials, asking for bitcoin or USDT. At least one vessel reportedly paid and was fired upon while attempting transit through the strategically critical waterway.
